Diary Entry 1
December 13th
Dear diary,
Last night the worst thing happened to Miss Maudie’s house. It caught on fire! The only thing left of it now is the ashy ruins. Men from all over Maycomb came to help get as much furniture out of her house as possible. They didn’t get it all, but they got a good bit of it out. It was really heart-warming to see everyone band together like that to get a job done for the community. Even fire departments from three different towns came to pitch in, but it was too little too late. Jem and I watched the fire from afar as Atticus had instructed us to. We were standing right in front of the Radley place. Later that night, when we got back to the house I realized I had a random blanket wrapped around me! I had no idea where it came from. Then Atticus told me that while we were watching the fire Boo Radley snuck behind me and cloaked me with a blanket. The second I heard chills ran down my back; it was disturbing, but I can’t believe I didn’t notice! I might have missed my only chance to see Boo Radley! When I went to talk to Miss Maudie today about it she put her optimistic twist on it, as always, and she said that she thought her house was too big anyway, and now she could build a smaller house and have more room for her garden.

Dear Diary,
Man, today was one heck of a day. Atticus done shot a mad dog! The mad dog was ol’ Tim Johnson, the dog of Mr. Harry Johnson, he’s the bus driver for Mobile. So let me tell ya what happened. One Saturday Jem and I were explorin’ lookin’ for a rabbit or a squirrel to shoot with our new air rifles. Jem spotted him first, and we examined him, and came to a conclusion that it must be ol’ Tim Johnson. We went to get Cal, and he said that somethin’ was up with him, she thought something was wrong with his foot, but Jem disputed this and said he looked “sick”. Then we took Calpurnia down to where we saw Tim Johnson, and then she acted all frantic-like and said “Gimme Mr. Finches office!” This is when she decided that Tim Johnson was now a mad dog. She then proceeded to call Miss Eula May, and told her to tell Miss Stephanie Crawford and Miss Rachel ‘bout the news. Since the Radley’s didn’t own a phone Cal had to run to their door an’ tell ‘em. Once she did this, she calmed down a little as we waited for ol’ Tim Johnson to come into view. A little while later, Mr. Heck Tate pulled up, he’s the sheriff of Maycomb County. He was carryin’ a rifle, and we expected that that he was going to shoot ol’ Tim Johnson, but we were wrong. To our surprise, Sherif Heck handed the rifle to Atticus or “One-Shot Finch” as the adults called him, and Atticus began walking to the middle of the street. Boy was I nervous! After what felt like forever, Atticus fired, and Tim Johnson lay limp on the road. Jem was totally shocked and I have to admit I was a little shocked too, I never would have guessed that Atticus possessed those skills! We just left Tim Johnson in the middle of the road until a little while later Zeebo, Maycomb’s trash man, pulled up, scooped him into the truck, and drove away. This was the end to one frantic day, but a good day too. I learned about a special talent Atticus had, that I had never known about. I guess Atticus isn’t so boring after all.
